Meditation

Meditation

Meditation is very big today in the world which is nice. Most people have heard about it many have tried it. But how many do really understand the essence of meditation? Very few.. We often believe that we are painting, singing, working in the garden that this is meditation. What we have to understand is that there is still activity often both in mind and in the physical body while we are into those activities. But yea one form of a more meditative state are happening but it is not meditation.

Many people also have the believes that laying down in the bed is meditation. To really meditate we have to sit with our spine straight and prepare ourselves for concentration (dharana) then meditation will happend (dhyan). The spine plays a very important role in meditation. We want to still, transcend and go beyond the mind totally to reach the state of meditation.

I have talked about meditation many times in my satsangs and meditation is the number 1 most important essence in my life and in my spiritual practice. It should be your number 1 one priority as well. (If you are serious about your life and spirituality.)

The most important aspects of meditation.

Meditation is a state of awareness just like sleep, the dream state, and waking. Just like we cannot teach you how to sleep, we can’t teach you how to meditate – it’s something that you have to experience for yourself.

What we can do is to create the right setting for this shift in awareness to happen. Just like we can create a good atmosphere and setting so it’s easy to fall asleep, we can do the same for meditation. So now that we are both clear that meditation is not something that we DO but something we can experience, let’s clear out one of the most common misconceptions of the practice of meditation.

Meditation is by definition the subjugations of the fluctuations of the mind – meaning stilling the mental osculations of the mind; stilling the mind. Experiencing mental calmness and clarity follows. To fall into the state of meditation one needs to first pass thought concentration. No concentration, no meditation. So in order to come into the meditative state we need to have something to focus the mind upon.

When the mind can fully concentrate on something on the outside it is time to go to the next level of difficulty – focusing on something on the inside. With a clear and continuous focus on a specific point on the inside we can fall into meditation. And in order to keep the mind concentrated on your inward focal point there are some important tools.

The first tool is our breath, to start the practice concentrate on the breath, make sure inhalation and exhalation are of equal length. When the breath has stabilized the mind is already a little calmer and we can start the real practice.

In the next set of tools a mantra is of great importance. The mind always wants something to do so we give it what it wants. You don’t want to be a slave under the mind anymore but you want to have the mind as your most effective tool or worker.

When we give the mind things to do it will keep itself busy. So it has a point to focus on and a sacred and uplifting word to tune the system with. This is a very effective way to start your meditation journey.

Establish a set space and a time where you sit and practice everyday, you can have crystals and essential oils to set the tone in this space, let this little place be only for meditation so that the vibration is accumulating in this area and you body will know what is expected of it when you sit down, the set time will drastically shorten.
